Deal in WTO Doha round doubtful this year-USTR Kirk

WASHINGTON, March 9 | Tue Mar 9, 2010 1:50pm EST

WASHINGTON, March 9 (Reuters) - The top U.S. trade official expressed doubt on Tuesday that negotiators could reach a deal this year in long-running world trade talks despite a goal set by President Barack Obama and other leaders.

But in remarks at the National Press Club, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk also said he did not believe countries should give up efforts to finish the eight-year-old round.

"I don't believe we should give up. A lot of good work has been done," he said in response to a question. (Reporting by Doug Palmer; Editing by Eric Walsh)
