PARIS, March 17 (Reuters) - Tidjane Thiam, the chief executive of UK insurer Prudential Plc (PRU.L) who recently made a $35.5 billion bid for AIG's (AIG.N) Asian business, is set to join the board of French bank Societe Generale (SOGN.PA).

SocGen said in a statement on Wednesday that Thiam would be nominated as an independent director for a four-year term at its annual shareholder meeting on May 25.

Earlier this month, investor sources told Reuters that Prudential Plc's top shareholders were warming to the company's $35.5 billion bid for AIG's AIA division after meetings with Thiam. [ID:nLDE62A16X]
