EU Commission sues Greece over unrefunded taxes

BRUSSELS, March 18 | Thu Mar 18, 2010 7:24am EDT

BRUSSELS, March 18 (Reuters) - The European Commission said on Thursday it was taking Greece to the European Court of Justice for failing to meet directives on refunding value-added tax and other taxes.

"The Commission has decided to bring Greece before the ECJ for incomplete implementation of three ECJ judgments against Greece with regard to the refund of unduly paid taxes, including VAT," the EU's executive said in a statement.

"Where a member state is found to have imposed a tax which is in violation of EU law, individuals have the right to obtain a refund of the amount of tax paid, not due, under law."

Cases before the European Court of Justice can take months or years to resolve.
