Three-month Euribor rate falls to record low
FRANKFURT, March 19 |
FRANKFURT, March 19 (Reuters) - The three-month Euribor rate dropped to a record low on Friday as the glut of cash pushed into markets by the European Central Bank kept downward pressure on bank-to-bank lending rates.
The three-month rate EURIBOR3MD=, traditionally the main gauge of interbank euro lending and a mix of interest rate expectations and banks' appetite for unsecured lending, fell to an all-time low of 0.642 percent from 0.643 percent previously.
The one-year rate EURIBOR1YD= remained at the previous day's level of 1.214 percent, the shorter-term one-week rate EURIBORSWD= stayed at 0.336 percent, and the six-month rate EURIBOR6MD= was flat at 0.951 percent.
The excess liquidity exerting downward pressure on interbank lending rates is expected to remain in the euro zone banking system for much of the year.
Earlier this month the ECB promised to keep providing banks with unlimited one-week and one-month loans until at least mid-October and kept its key interest rate at a record low of 1 percent for the tenth month running.
Euribor rates are fixed daily by the Banking Federation of the European Union (FBE) shortly after 1000 GMT.
