Strong quake hits north of India Andaman islands

SINGAPORE, March 31 (Reuters) - A strong 6.4 magnitude quake struck north of the Indian Andaman Islands on Tuesday, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake, earlier put at 6.9 magnitude, struck 137 miles north of Port Blair, the California Integrated Seismic Network said, an area devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The quake was 28.6 miles deep.

There was no danger of a destructive tsunami, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
