Rip Torn exits rehab and pleads not guilty

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Actor Rip Torn has been released from an alcohol treatment clinic and pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to charges stemming from his arrest on suspicion of being drunk and armed inside a closed Connecticut bank.

Torn, 79, pleaded not guilty to charges including burglary, criminal trespassing and possessing a gun while intoxicated. His lawyer, A. Thomas Waterfall, said he expects a "resolution" at his next court hearing on April 27.

Torn was released from an alcohol rehabilitation clinic in New York on Monday, the lawyer said. He started the program last month after police said they responded to an alarm and found Torn highly intoxicated inside the Litchfield bank in his hometown of Salisbury, Connecticut, with a loaded revolver.

At the time, his lawyer said the actor was disoriented and thought he was at home.

Torn, who has been previously arrested for driving while drunk, won an Emmy award for his role on "The Larry Sanders Show" in the 1990s and was nominated for an Oscar for "Cross Creek" in 1983. He also appeared in the movie "Men in Black" and is a cousin of actress Sissy Spacek.
