KANSAS CITY, MO, Apr 06 (MARKET WIRE) --
For the second year in a row, Grantham University, an online university
serving working adult students around the world for nearly 60 years, has
partnered with the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Association of the
United States Army (KC AUSA) to provide one full, four-year scholarship
to a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) and one full, four-year scholarship
to the spouse of a NCO. The scholarships cover tuition costs for an
undergraduate or graduate degree, required textbooks, software, fees and
shipping of the course materials. The value of each scholarship is
approximately $36,000.
"Grantham has supported AUSA nationally and locally for many years, and
we're honored to make it possible for two deserving members of the
military community to pursue their educational goals," said Lieutenant
General Thomas Rhame (Ret.), member of Grantham University's board of
governors and the vice president of finance and administration for the
AUSA.
Last year's scholarship recipients, Sgt. Matthew Giersdorf, a NCO from
Fort Riley, Kansas, and Lisa Kirk, the spouse of a NCO from Topeka,
Kansas, are well on the way to realizing their dreams of earning a
college degree.
Sgt. Giersdorf is pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal
Justice. After he completes his military service, Sgt. Giersdorf would
like to use his education and military experience to teach communities
about the dangers of drug abuse and violence in an effort to improve the
quality of life for the citizens of those communities.
Ms. Kirk, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Multidisciplinary
Studies, is looking forward to becoming the first of four siblings to
earn a college degree. "This scholarship provides me with the opportunity
to combine my 17 years of experience with a college education, which will
give me additional credibility in the workplace," said Ms. Kirk.
"It is our mission to promote the importance of maintaining a strong and
ready Army in our community," said Diane Boeger, KCAUSA president. "One
way we can do that is by partnering with Grantham University to provide
our members with continuing education and training opportunities,
including the annual awarding of the NCO and NCO Spouse scholarships.
This is a great program and we're proud to be a part of it."
Scholarship eligibility requirements and the online application can be
found at http://www.grantham.edu/ausa-nco. Scholarship recipients must
reside in the communities of Greater Kansas City, Ft. Leavenworth, Ft.
Riley, and Topeka. Applicants do not need to be a member of AUSA.
Applications for the Grantham University NCO and NCO Spouse Scholarship
Program must be submitted by midnight (Central time), May 11, 2010.
Grantham University will present the NCO Scholarships at the Heart of
America Army Birthday Celebration on June 5, 2010, at the Westin Crown
Center Hotel, in Kansas City, Mo.
