New Film Explores the Twin Achievement Gaps: Between Low-Income Minority Students and Their More Affluent Peers, and between the U.S. and Its Economic Competitors NEW YORK--(Business Wire)-- Education reformer Whitney Tilson will host the premiere of a new documentary film titled, "A Right Denied: The Critical Need for Genuine School Reform." There will be back-to-back screenings in New York City on Wednesday, April 7th at the SVA Theatre at 2:00 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Inspired by other hard-hitting documentaries that focus on imminent global threats, the new film features Tilson giving an in-depth presentation on the twin achievement gaps that threaten our nation's future: between low-income, minority students and their more affluent peers, and between the U.S. and its economic competitors. "Everyone is aware that our public school system is broken and must be fixed," said Tilson. "But reformers have been stymied by those who benefit from the status quo, so what is needed to break this political paralysis is a collection of data and arguments that forcefully advocate for an urgent school reform agenda - and that`s exactly what guided us as we developed our film." A Right Denied was produced by True South Studios and Bob Compton, whose award winning documentary, Two Million Minutes, profiled the academic lives of students from India, China and the U.S., while shedding a critical light on the educational and cultural differences that separate the student experience in each country. "Documentaries about education reform have done their part to alert people of the need for change in our public school system," said Compton. "But what`s special about this film is that it also presents us with a way forward so our nation can deliver on its promise to provide all children with a quality education." After spending more than two decades on the front lines, witnessing first-hand public education's shocking failures and remarkable successes, Tilson created a powerful and, at times, unsettling presentation about the twin achievement gaps and what must be done to address them. He utilizes the latest data and research to paint the most detailed portrait of American public education ever committed to film. Tilson will host two screenings of the film at the SVA Theatre, located at 333 West 23rd St. on Wednesday, April 7th. The afternoon premiere will begin with a welcome reception at 2:00 p.m., followed by the film`s screening from 2:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. After the screening, an hour-long discussion/Q&A with leading education reformers will be held.
