PORT SEVERN, ONTARIO, Apr 06 (MARKET WIRE) --
On behalf of the Honourable Jim Prentice, Canada's Environment Minister
and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, the Honourable Tony Clement,
Minister of Industry and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound - Muskoka,
today announced major investments in Georgian Bay Islands National Park.
This project is delivered through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund of
Canada's Economic Action Plan.
"The Government of Canada is now working to deliver Year II of Canada's
Economic Action Plan," said Mr. Clement. "This investment of up to $2.3
million will enhance visitor infrastructure, employ Canadians and improve
visitors' experiences at Georgian Bay Islands National Park."
This investment will provide for upgrading and re-design of existing
services, structures and camping areas. Changes will accommodate current
and increased visitation and reflect the needs of today's visitor. The
project includes enhancements at Cedar Springs Campground that will
improve the overall visitor experience, re-engage existing visitors and
attract new audiences.
"Tourism is an important economic contributor to many communities across
this great country," said Minister Prentice. "Our Government's investment
in this picturesque national park will not only help preserve and improve
this treasured place, it will also provide local construction jobs and
economic activity which will help encourage tourism in central Ontario."
Tourism represents a significant economic opportunity for Canada and, for
this reason, has been targeted in Canada's Economic Action Plan. In 2007,
the tourism sector contributed approximately $28.6 billion to the
Canadian economy and employed 653,400 Canadians. Canada's Economic Action
Plan is our government's plan to stimulate our economy during the global
recession.
Canada's Economic Action Plan contains $374 million for improvements to
facilities and protection of Canada's national parks and national
historic sites. As a result of these investments many skilled women and
men in the construction, tourism and conservation sectors, will be hired
in every province and territory of Canada.
