Finnish airspace closed until at least Wed. morning

HELSINKI, April 20 | Tue Apr 20, 2010 6:44am EDT

HELSINKI, April 20 (Reuters) - Finland's airport operator Finavia said on Tuesday the Nordic country's airspace would be closed until at least 0600 GMT on Wednesday due to the ash cloud spewed by an Icelandic volcano last week.

A spokeswoman said further updates could still come later in the day.

The European Union said earlier there had been slow progress in opening up European airspace after the cancellation of many flights because of the volcanic ash cloud.

A spokeswoman for the executive European Commission said the situation was unprecedented and disruptions to flights were expected to continue this week.
