UPDATE 1-Waste Connections Q1 profit beats Wall Street view

April 20 (Reuters) - Trash hauler Waste Connections Inc (WCN.N) posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit, helped by strong recycled commodity prices.

For the first quarter, the company earned $27.6 million, or 35 cents a share, compared with $22 million, or 27 cents a share, a year ago.

Revenue rose 17 percent to $307.5 million.

Analysts on average expected the company to earn 34 cents a share, on revenue of $304.9 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

"We continue to believe that organic volume growth could turn positive by third quarter," Chief Executive Ronald Mittelstaedt said in a statement.

Shares of the Folsom, California-based company closed at $35.17 Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
