April 22 (Reuters) - Exco Resources (XCO.N) said it encountered an unexpected gas flow in a Louisiana well, but no injuries or damage to drilling equipment occurred.

The oil and gas explorer said homes close to the well were voluntarily evacuated after the incident on April 18.

The company said the source of the unexpected gas flow in the well being drilled at a depth of 1,533 feet is under evaluation, and plugging and abandonment procedures are on.

Shares of Exco closed at $19.24 Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange.
