* One tree per employee to be planted by CIGNA throughout the nation * Company reinforces commitment green friendly operations BLOOMFIELD, Conn.--(Business Wire)-- In recognition of Earth Day, CIGNA (NYSE: CI) will plant 26,000 trees throughout the country -- one tree for each of the company`s domestic employees. Studies show that trees not only improve the health of a community by reducing toxins in the air and water, they also improve the mental and emotional wellbeing of individuals by offering a respite from urban living. "At CIGNA, we recognize that improving health also includes strengthening the communities where we live and do business," said Bryan Peters, Director of Corporate Service Operations and Environmental Sustainability for CIGNA. "Trees beautify our communities and make them more livable. That`s why we are proud to plant trees to honor our employees in celebration of Earth Day." Trees will be planted near CIGNA offices around the country and at other locations through donations to various not-for-profit organizations such as The Arbor Day Foundation and American Forest. The company also educates employees about recycling, energy efficiency and other green activities through the CIGNA Green STEPS program, and the company is working to lessen its environmental footprint. CIGNA has taken energy saving and waste reduction measures, pursuing consolidation into newer and more energy-efficient buildings such as CIGNA's first LEED-certified building in Dallas, and renovating existing space to maximize energy efficiency.
