DAR ES SALAAM | Wed May 5, 2010 10:29am EDT

DAR ES SALAAM May 5 (Reuters) - South African economic development Minister Ebrahim Patel said on Wednesday the rand currency needed to be more competitive to support the productive sectors of the biggest economy in Africa.

"We've got to get our currency to be more competitive. That's a particular challenge that we face," Patel told Reuters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum for Africa in Tanzania.

He declined to go into details of how he felt the rand should be weakened. (Reporting by Matthew Tostevin, Writing by Phumza Macanda)
