CANBERRA May 7 (Reuters) - Australia's new 40 percent tax on mining projects will not have dire consequences for the industry, Treasurer Wayne Swan on Friday, adding some mining executives have been whipping up a fear campaign.

The new tax, due to start in mid 2012, has angered the mining industry, which has warned it will hurt investment and see mining capital move offshore.
