Obama nominates Kagan for Supreme Court

WASHINGTON | Mon May 10, 2010 10:10am EDT

WASHINGTON May 10 (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama nominated Solicitor General Elena Kagan for the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday, calling her fair-minded, a consensus-builder and one of the country's best legal minds.

Kagan, known as a relative liberal must now be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. If confirmed, she is not expected to change the ideological balance of the court, which considers contentious social issues and is the final adjudicator on all questions about the U.S. Constitution.
