US EPA limits carbon control rules to big polluters

WASHINGTON | Thu May 13, 2010 12:04pm EDT

WASHINGTON May 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday issued a rule that will subject power plants, oil refineries and another factories that emit at least 75,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year to carbon-control regulations starting in January 2011.

The EPA said its rule will also apply, beginning in July 2011, to mostly solid waste landfills and industrial manufacturers that emit at least 100,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas a year.

The agency said it will not act before at least April 30, 2016 to require smaller sources of emissions to get permits.
