China's Huawei offers to share source code -report

MUMBAI | Thu May 13, 2010 11:46pm EDT

MUMBAI May 14 (Reuters) - Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei Technologies [HWT.UL] has offered to reveal the source code for its network systems to persuade India its gear does not pose a security threat, the Economic Times reported on Friday.

"As per generally accepted international industry practices, vendors can open their source code with authorities under mutually accepted arrangement and the company had told the Indian government it was open to this option," the newspaper quoted an unnamed Huawei representative as saying.

Industry sources have said the Indian government is not approving equipment orders from Chinese vendors because of security concerns. [ID:nHKU002309]

The dispute, centred on Indian concerns Chinese equipment may have spying technology embedded, risks growing into a diplomatic row between the giant neighbours, who have long been suspicious of each other and fought a war in 1962.

Huawei officials were not immediately available for comment, but the company had said last week it was ensuring its networks were secure. [ID:nTOE644044]

On Thursday, India's home secretary asked China's ZTE Corp (0763.HK) for more information on security, giving the telecoms gear firm an opportunity to make its case for why it should be able to provide equipment in India. [ID:nSGE64C0JA]
