HOUSTON May 16 (Reuters) - BP Plc (BP.L) on Sunday said it was siphoning oil from a blown-out well a mile (1.6 km) beneath the Gulf of Mexico, its first success in containing oil that has been spewing unabated into the sea.

"So far it's working extremely well," BP senior executive vice president Kent Wells told reporters at a briefing at BP's U.S. headquarters in Houston.
