Obama: U.S. and China can promote balanced growth

WASHINGTON | Mon May 24, 2010 5:16pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Monday said the United States and China could collaborate to achieve better balanced global growth, in a coded reference to Washington's desire for greater yuan flexibility.

"Together, we can promote economic growth that is balanced and sustained and trade that is free and fair," Obama said in a statement to the U.S.-China Strategic & Economic Dialogue being held in Beijing.

"We can address pressing regional and global security challenges ... We need to improve communication between our militaries, which promotes mutual understanding and confidence," he said.
