NEW YORK (Reuters) - The NFL on Tuesday awarded the 2014 Super Bowl to New Jersey's New Meadowlands Stadium, the shared home of the New York Giants and New York Jets.

While the venue will be the first cold-weather site to host the game outdoors, the Super Bowl has been held in other cold-weather cities with the games played in a domed stadium.

* Feb 5, 2006 - in Detroit, Michigan at Ford Field. Pittsburgh Steelers beat Seattle Seahawks 21-10

* Jan 30, 2000 - in Atlanta, Georgia at Georgia Dome (not a classic winter site, yet plagued by ice storms that week). St Louis Rams beat Tennessee Titans 23-16

* Jan 26, 1992 - in Minneapolis, Minnesota at Metrodome. Washington Redskins beat Buffalo Bills 37-24

* Jan 24, 1982 - in Pontiac, Michigan at Silverdome. San Francisco 49ers beat Cincinnati Bengals 26-21
