PARIS, May 29 (Reuters) - Renault (RENA.PA) will produce the new version of its Trafic van at Sandouville in France, an industry ministry spokesman said on Saturday, announcing a decision which came after calls from politicians for the company to protect local jobs.

A Renault spokeswoman said it was too early to reveal which model would be built at the Sandouville site, in the Haute-Normandie region of northern France.

The group has been saying since October 2008 that it would build a commercial vehicle there. "However it's much too early to give the name of the vehicle," she said.

"It's a vehicle that will come out in 2013 so we won't announce it straight away. It won't be tomorrow, it won't be in the coming months," the spokeswoman said.

Renault came under pressure from French politicians at the start of the year to produce the new version of its Clio small car in France. The French state owns 15 percent of Renault.

Le Figaro earlier cited industry ministry sources as well as a CGT union source saying the new version of the van, which is currently built in Spain and Britain, would be made in Sandouville, where Renault builds high-end cars like the Espace.

The paper said Renault was trying to convince partners Nissan Motor Co Ltd (7201.T) and General Motors [GM.UL] unit Opel to move production of their Vivaro and Primastar vans, which are produced at the same sites, to Sandouville too.
