UPDATE 1-Alabama closes oyster beds, warns swimmers over oil

MOBILE, Ala., June 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. Gulf Coast state of Alabama closed its oyster beds on Tuesday and discouraged swimming on its barrier island resort of Dauphin Island due to the presence of spilled oil, state authorities said.
In a warning that the large, fragmented slick from the huge Gulf of Mexico oil spill was threatening more of the U.S. Gulf Coast, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had forecast that winds could drive some of the floating crude onto the Alabama coast this week.
"Oil has been identified on a portion of Dauphin Island beaches and in waters immediately offshore ... individuals are discouraged from swimming in these waters," the state's Department of Public Health said in a statement on Tuesday.
It also said all Alabama oyster beds were being closed from mid-afternoon, calling this a precautionary measure. It gave no immediate details of the amounts of oil located.
The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources said it was also closing Alabama Gulf waters to fishing from the east end of Dauphin Island to the Mississippi state line.
On May 8, tar balls washed up from the Gulf onto the main public beach of Dauphin Island's east end, alarming beachgoers and stirring media excitement. Cleanup crews contracted by BP (BP.L), which is the majority owner of the leaking Gulf of Mexico well, quickly collected the tar globs.
But the latest announcement from state authorities indicated more oil was expected on the narrow, 14-mile (23 km) beach island, which has a year-round population of 1,300 people but has many more visitors.
Workers had already set up protective booms on parts of Dauphin Island to try to keep the oil from the shore.
In Alabama, the oil spill poses a serious setback to efforts to enhance oysteries and other marine resources.
The state recently launched an ambitious restoration program that includes temporary closure of its publicly owned oyster reefs and the relocation of 6 million pounds of oysters from upper Mobile Bay to other areas,
