Russia, US, France respond to Iran fuel deal
VIENNA, June 9 |
VIENNA, June 9 (Reuters) - Big powers have notified the U.N. nuclear watchdog of their concerns about a proposal for Iran to send some of its nuclear material to Turkey in return for atomic fuel, diplomats told Reuters on Wednesday.
Russia, France and the United States have handed a response to U.N. nuclear watchdog chief Yukiya Amano, they said. It has been passed on to Iran's envoy ahead of a U.N. Security Council vote on new sanctions against Tehran.
A proposal to swap low-enriched uranium for fuel to run an Iranian medical research reactor was agreed last month by Iran with Turkey and Brazil. Western powers have said this plan did not address core concerns about Iran's nuclear work, which they believe it aimed at developing atomic weapons. Iran denies this.
