"Hawaii Five-0" hoping to arrest Comic-Con fans
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Could a crime procedural make a big splash at a fanboy convention?
CBS is bringing its new police drama "Hawaii Five-0" to next month's Comic-Con in San Diego, just one of several off-beat choices invading the increasingly broad-based event.
In addition to "Five-0," ABC is bringing crime drama "Castle" and FX is touting outlaw biker drama "Sons of Anarchy," both for the first time.
Though the shows exist in more grounded genres than early Comic-Con TV pioneers like "Lost" and "Battlestar Galactica," each has some compelling reasons for their inclusion.
"Hawaii Five-0," a remake of the 1970s series is CBS' tentpole new title for the fall -- and boasts heavy amounts of action. But what best lures Comic-Con fans to a new show is the cast, and "Five-0" has "Battlestar" veteran Grace Park and ex-"Lost" co-star Daniel Dae Kim.
Networks are using similar logic behind "Sons of Anarchy" and "Castle." "Sons" stars "Hellboy" lead Ron Perlman and "Futurama" co-star Katey Sagal, while "Castle" has "Firefly" and "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" star Nathan Fillion.
Some new shows making their Comic-Con debut include NBC's thriller "The Event" and superhero drama "The Cape"; ABC's superhero family drama "No Ordinary Family"; the CW's "Nikita"; Fox's new animated show "Bob's Burgers"; AMC's "The Walking Dead" and Steven Spielberg's dino-drama "Terra Nova.
The San Diego event, running July 22-25, will also host a slew of returning shows, including Fox's "Glee," "Fringe" and "Human Target"; ABC's "V"; Starz' "Spartacus"; NBC's "Chuck" and the CW's "Vampire Diaries."
