BP to nearly double siphoning in July-Coast Guard
HOUSTON, June 11 |
HOUSTON, June 11 (Reuters) - BP Plc. (BP.L) (BP.N) will seek to nearly double its oil collection capacity by mid-July, the top U.S. official overseeing the Gulf of Mexico spill cleanup effort said on Friday.
Once a "hard cap" containment system is in place by the middle of July, BP's oil-siphoning capacity will rise to up to 50,000 barrels per day, Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen told reporters at a briefing in Washington.
BP's collection capacity is currently about 18,000 bpd, and will increase to about 28,000 bpd once a new oil-flaring rig is activated next week, Allen said.

I think BP execs should be made to drink the difference…
BP are not a British company, they haven’t been in a long time (by name and nature). They are a multinational, in the same way ExxonMobil are. They are floated on the NY stock exchange, as well as London. They employ 23,000 in the US, and under 15,000 in the UK.
I work offshore, and never see anybody smoking on platforms like you do in the gulf of mexico. US offshore regulations are laxx compared with the rest of the world, and well behind UK North Sea, and Norwegian North Sea standards. The valve was not tested correctly, but I seem to remember this was the responsibility of Haliburton to maintain (ahh, a US company??).
I agree with VitaminD3man, make the exec’s drink it, it’s the fault of BP and haliburton, oh and maybe lax regulations by the authorities in charge of offshore drilling in the US – which is why Barrack is finger pointing and making this such a political thing).
Let’s hope that BEYOND PETROLEUM (as they’ve been known for decades) sort this out, and quickly for the sake of the gulf.
