NATO forces clash with Taliban in Afghan east
KABUL |
KABUL (Reuters) - NATO-led troops came under an attack by insurgents involving rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire on Monday in eastern Afghanistan, an official for the alliance said.
The official had no further details about the incident in eastern Nangarhar, saying only "it was an ongoing clash".
A spokesman for the Taliban, Zabihullah Mujahid, said members of the militant group ambushed a large convoy involving Afghan and NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Sherzad district.
"We have destroyed several of their tanks, killed 13 Afghan soldiers and captured some of them," Mujahid said by phone from an undisclosed location.
"We have some wounded, the fighting is going on and they are bombing too."
