Canada to impose new emission limits on coal power

WINNIPEG, June 23 | Wed Jun 23, 2010 9:12am EDT

WINNIPEG, June 23 (Reuters) - Canada will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by introducing new regulations for coal-fired electricity generation, Environment Minister Jim Prentice said on Wednesday.

He told a news conference that the proposed regulations would apply a stringent performance standard to new coal-fired electricity generation units as well as to aging coal-fired units.

The standard would be based on parity with the emissions performance of high-efficiency natural gas generation. Prentice did not specify when the regulations would be introduced. (Reporting by Rod Nickel, writing by David Ljunggren)
