U.S. House approves money for Afghan troop surge

WASHINGTON, July 1 | Thu Jul 1, 2010 10:32pm EDT

WASHINGTON, July 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives approved funds on Thursday to pay for President Barack Obama's Afghanistan troop increase, despite growing unhappiness with the war among his fellow Democrats.

Obama asked Congress in February for $33 billion to help pay for 30,000 more troops being sent this year. But the administration will not get the money by July 4 as it had hoped. The House added some non-military spending, so the measure must return to the Senate for approval before it can be signed into law. (Reporting by Susa Cornwell, editing by Anthony Boadle)
