HOUSTON, July 14 | Wed Jul 14, 2010 6:30pm EDT

HOUSTON, July 14 (Reuters) - BP Plc (BP.L) (BP.N) has begun a critical test to gauge pressure in its gushing Gulf of Mexico oil well with the main route for the flow shut off, a company executive said on Wednesday.

Kent Wells, BP's senior vice president of exploration and production, said the "ultimate" would come when all flow is shut off, but "we no longer have flow out the top."
