UPDATE 1-Omega Protein files reimbursement claim with BP
* Files claim with BP to recover cost, lost profit
* Says closures of fishing grounds continues to hurt
July 15 (Reuters) - Omega Protein Corp (OME.N), a fish oil and meal products maker, said it filed a claim with oil major BP (BP.L) (BP.N) for reimbursement of costs or lost profits resulting from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Omega Protein, which said it has also temporarily ceased fishing with certain vessels from time to time, added federal and state closures of fishing grounds because of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill have continued to affect the company.
The company said total fish catch was at about 89 percent of its total 2010 fish catch plan, at the end of the twelfth week of its 2010 fishing season.
The fishing season in the Gulf usually peaks from July to September.
The company, which sells a line of fish oils for human consumption, specialty fish meals, and oils used as ingredients in aquaculture, pet foods and livestock feeds, relies mainly on the menhaden fish as the main source of its products.
In May, the company's finance chief told Reuters that he saw little impact then from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, but "if (accumulated costs) become large enough, we'll certainly send someone a bill." [ID:nSGE64G0IK]
