"Hockey Musical" to open Toronto Film Fest
TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - "Score: A Hockey Musical," an homage to Canada's national sport, will open the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9.
The coming-of-age movie portrays a sheltered 17-year-old, played by newcomer Noah Reid, going from zero to hero on the ice in a matter of weeks. Think "Glee" with sticks and skates as hockey players croon while slapping a puck round an ice rink.
Singer/songwriter Marc Jordan and Olivia Newton-John, who play the youngster's highbrow parents, also co-wrote and perform a song for the indie movie's closing credits. The ensemble cast includes pop singer Nelly Furtado.
The film's writer/director, Michael McGowan, was previously at Toronto with the 2008 road movie "One Week" and the 2004 drama "Saint Ralph," both of which were local hits. An October release is scheduled for "Score."
