Obama condemns bombing of Iran mosque
WASHINGTON |
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday condemned the suicide bombing of a mosque in southeastern Iran, saying those responsible must be held accountable.
Two suicide bombers killed at least 28 people in Thursday's bombing.
"The murder of innocent civilians in their place of worship is an intolerable offense, and those who carried it out must be held accountable," Obama said in a statement.
Iran said the United States backed the group that claimed responsibility for the blast, the Sunni Muslim rebel group Jundollah.
The United States is locked in a stand-off with Iran over its nuclear program, which Tehran insists is for peaceful purposes but Washington and other major powers fear is a cover to build an atomic bomb.
