UPDATE 1-Telefonica, Televisa win in Mexico frequency tender
* Frequencies ranging from 1850 to 1990 MHz auctioned
* Bidding on 1710 to 2170 MHz range ongoing (Updates with Telefonica quote)
MEXICO CITY, July 16 (Reuters) - Spain's Telefonica, tycoon Ricardo Salinas and broadcasting heavyweight Televisa made $230 million in winning bids to acquire wireless frequencies in one of two tenders, the country's telecom regulator said on Friday.
Cellphone operators in Mexico's telecom industry, dominated by billionaire Carlos Slim, have been waiting for years for the government to auction more frequencies so that they can expand their services.
In the auction of frequencies ranging from 1850 to 1990 MHz, broadcaster Televisa (TLVACPO.MX) (TV.N) and its partner Nextel had a top bid worth 48 million pesos for one block of frequency, Cofetel said in a statement.
Pegaso, owned by Telefonica, bid 2.87 billion pesos for several blocks up for grabs and Telecomunicaciones del Golfo, controlled by retail and media tycoon Ricardo Salinas, offered 65 million pesos for several other blocks.
"With these new frequencies, we will continue to reinforce our business in the country and we will extend our 3G network," Telefonica said in a statement.
Bidding for a second group of frequency concessions in the 1710 to 2170 MHz range is ongoing.
Telefonica (TEF.MC), Mexico's No. 2 wireless operator, lacks coverage around the nation's capital and is expected to benefit a lot from gaining new spectrum.
Televisa, the No. 1 broadcaster in Mexico, is expanding into the mobile phone business with NII Holdings' (NIHD.O) Nextel. ($1 = 12.93 pesos) (Reporting by Noel Randewich and Robin Emmott; Editing by Gary Hill)
