U.S. to leave BP well sealed through storm: government
HOUSTON |
HOUSTON (Reuters) - An approaching storm could have "significant impacts" on efforts to contain oil from BP Plc's blown-out Macondo well, but the U.S. government will allow the well to remain sealed even if surface vessels must evacuate, the top U.S. oil spill official said on Thursday.
"We have determined that if we have to evacuate the site, we are prepared to leave the well capped," retired Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen told reporters at a briefing.
