NEW YORK, July 23 (Reuters) - Koch Industries, which owns paper and packaging company Georgia-Pacific, is in "deep discussions" to buy packaging maker Pactiv Corp PTV.N, the New York Post reported on Friday.

The Post, citing sources familiar with the matter, said bids for Pactiv, which makes Hefty brand trash bags, were likely in early to mid-August.

Shares of Pactiv were up $1.37, or 4.6 percent, at $31.02 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Georgia-Pacific [KCHINP.UL] was reported to be among the bidders for Pactiv in May. A source familiar with the situation previously told Reuters that buyout firm Apollo [APOLO.UL] was also in discussions to buy the company. (Reporting by Michael Erman; editing by John Wallace)
