Glaxo made casual approach to Genzyme-WSJ

NEW YORK, July 25 | Sun Jul 25, 2010 7:42pm EDT

NEW YORK, July 25 (Reuters) - Drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline (GSK.L) made a "very casual approach" to Genzyme Corp GENZ.O, asking to be notified if Genzyme considered selling itself, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

There have been no further discussions between the two companies, the Journal said.

Sanofi-Aventis SA (SASY.PA) is sounding out biotech company Genzyme Corp GENZ.O as the French drugmaker hunts for a large acquisition, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday.

Genzyme, whose shares rose more than 15 percent on the news, is beginning to emerge from a manufacturing crisis that caused shortages of two of its biggest-selling drugs.

Genzyme and Glaxo were not immediately available for comment. (Reporting by Michael Erman; Editing by Diane Craft)
