NEW YORK, July 26 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks extended gains late in the session on Monday after an upbeat outlook from FedEx (FDX.N) and solid home sales data cheered investors.

* The Nasdaq rose 1 percent, helped by gains in Genzyme GENZ.O on takeover speculation after the Wall Street Journal said Britain's GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK.L)(GSK.N) had recently made "a very casual approach," to the U.S. biotech company.

* The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI gained 74.51 points, or 0.71 percent, to 10,499.13. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX rose 9.18 points, or 0.83 percent, to 1,111.84. The Nasdaq Composite Index .IXIC climbed 20.33 points, or 0.90 percent, to 2,289.80.
