UPDATE 1-BMC Software Q1 profit trails Street, keeps 2011 view

July 28 (Reuters) - Business software maker BMC Software Inc (BMC.O) posted a quarterly adjusted profit that missed street expectations, hurt in part by lower-than-expected revenue and higher expenses, but maintained its full-year outlook for 2010.
BMC, which provides software to automate data center operations, maintained its 2011 earnings forecast of $2.84 a share to $2.94 a share. Analysts were expecting profit of $2.88 a share for the full-year 2011.
First-quarter net income rose to $92.8 million, or 50 cents a share, from $82.4 million, or 44 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Excluding items, the company posted earnings of 62 cents a share.
Revenue rose 2 percent to $461 million.
Analysts were expecting earnings of 64 cents a share, excluding items, on revenue of $472.8 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
