Chilean stocks .IPSA were flat early Friday, as better-than-expected local employment figures helped offset early losses after weak second quarter growth data in the United States.

"The U.S. GDP figure... sent everything down this morning," said Sebastian Rauff, a trader with the Scotia Bank brokerage in Santiago.

"But at the local level the employment figure was a pleasant surprise," he added. For more, see [ID:nN30168849]

Forestry and paper conglomerate CMPC CAR.SN led the index's recovery with a 2.3 percent gain, and top airline LAN LAN.SN rose 1.3 percent. Regional energy group Enersis ENE.SN fell 0.5 percent and local generator Colbun COL.SN lost 0.9 percent.
