Aug 3 (Reuters) - In-theatre digital advertising company National CineMedia Inc (NCMI.O) posted a lower-than-expected quarterly profit, hurt by lower attendance at special screenings.
Revenue from its Fathom Events business, which includes live cinema events of concerts, sports, and other unique programming, fell about 5 percent in the quarter ended June 30, 2010.
The company, however, forecast third-quarter revenue of $118 million to $121 million, above analysts' expectations of revenue of $105.1 million.
"Strong openings from several late second-quarter and early third-quarter films" would help drive third-quarter sales, Chief Executive Kurt Hall said in a statement.
Second-quarter net income fell to $4.6 million or 11 cents a share, from $7.1 million, or 17 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Excluding one-time items, the company posted a profit of 14 cents a share in the 2010 period.
Revenue rose about 7 percent to $99.1 million.
Analysts had expected earnings of 16 cents a share, on revenue of $99.2 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Shares of the Centennial, Colorado-based company closed at $17.91 Tuesday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Sudipto Ganguly in Bangalore; Editing by Aradhana Aravindan, Anthony Kurian)
