UPDATE 1-Sonic posts surprise Q1 profit; shares down on rev view

* Shares down 8 pct Aug 4 (Reuters) - Sonic Solutions SNIC.O posted a surprise first-quarter adjusted profit, helped by lower expenses, but forecast second-quarter revenue below Wall Street view, sending the digital media company's shares down 8 percent.

The company, which agreed to buy video compression software maker DivX Inc DIVX.O for about $323 million in June, expects second-quarter revenue of at least $26 million.

Analysts were expecting revenue of $27.6 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

For the first quarter, Sonic posted net loss of $1.1 million, or 3 cents a share, compared with a loss of $1.8 million, or 7 cents a share, a year ago.

Excluding items, the company earned 2 cents a share.

Net revenue fell less than 1 percent to $25.4 million.

Analysts on average were looking for a loss of 2 cents a share, before items, on revenue of $25.6 million.

On an adjusted basis, operating expenses fell 6 percent to $16.9 million.

Shares of the company fell 67 cents to $7.25 in trading after the bell. The stock closed at $7.92 Wednesday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Supantha Mukherjee in Bangalore)
