CHICAGO Aug 5 (Reuters) - One of U.S. President Barack Obama's top economic advisers, Christina Romer, said in a statement on Thursday that she would step down from her post, effective Sept. 3, to return to being a professor in California.

As chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, Romer helped oversee the Obama administration's response to the economic crisis.
