WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Christina Romer will step down as head of the president's Council of Economic Advisers, effective September 3, the White House announced on Thursday.

Here are some possible candidates who could be considered to succeed Romer as U.S. President Barack Obama's senior economic adviser:

*Austan Goolsbee, staff director and chief economist on the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board. He's also serves as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers. Goolsbee was an advisor to Obama's presidential campaign.

*Jared Bernstein, chief economic adviser to Vice President Joe Biden. Before joining the Obama administration, Bernstein was an economist at the Economic Policy Institute. He also served as chief economist at the U.S. Labor Department.

*Laura Tyson is a former top economic adviser to former President Bill Clinton. She is currently a professor at the University of California Berkeley Haas School of Business. Tyson also is a member of the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board, an outside panel of economic experts advising Obama.
