Aug 9 (Reuters) - Software maker Pegasystems Inc (PEGA.O) posted a lower-than-expected adjusted quarterly profit, hurt by higher operating costs, sending its shares down 6 percent in after-market trade.
For the second quarter, it posted a net loss of $8.2 million, or 22 cents a share, compared with net income of $11.2 million, or 30 cents a share, a year ago.
Excluding $9.5 million in charges related to its acquisition of Chordiant and restructuring, the company earned 10 cents a share.
Revenue rose 29 percent to $82.2 million.
Analysts on average were expecting earnings of 16 cents on revenue of $84.9 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
For 2010, Pegasystems forecast earnings of $1.02 a share, excluding items, on revenue of $348 million.
Analysts were expecting earnings of 84 cents a share on revenue of $354.9 million.
Shares of the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company fell 6 percent to $28 in trading after the bell. They closed at $29.65 Monday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Shravya Jain in Bangalore; Editing by Roshni Menon)
