Aug 19 (Reuters) - Precision dispensing equipment maker Nordson Corp (NDSN.O) posted better-than-expected quarterly results, helped in part by a 53 percent rise in advanced technology systems revenue, and forecast a strong fourth quarter.
For the third quarter ended July 31, the company reported earnings of $55.3 million, or $1.61 a share, compared with $24.0 million, or 71 cents a share in the year-ago period.
Excluding items, it earned $1.30 a share.
Nordson, which makes products used in industries ranging from automotive to food and beverage to semiconductor, posted a 35 percent rise in revenue to $279 million.
Revenue from the advanced technology systems segment was $105.7 million.
Analysts on average were expecting earnings of $1.12 a share, before items, on revenue of $263.8 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
For the fourth quarter, the company forecast earnings of $1.30 to $1.41 a share, on revenue of $283-$293 million.
Analysts were expecting earnings of $1.16 a share, on revenue of $281.6 million.
