Spain says 2 Qaeda hostages have been freed-spokesman

MADRID | Mon Aug 23, 2010 7:58am EDT

MADRID Aug 23 (Reuters) - The Spanish government said two aid workers held by al Qaeda's North African wing were freed on Monday, ending a nearly nine-month kidnapping that became the longest in the Sahara desert.

"I can confirm that both men have been freed and are safe," a government spokesman said on Monday.

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero will hold a news conference at 1215 GMT to provide further details of the release, he said.
