Australia PM: opposition to submit policy costings

CANBERRA | Thu Aug 26, 2010 10:58pm EDT

CANBERRA Aug 27 (Reuters) - Australia's opposition has agreed to allow Treasury officials to analyse its election promises, Prime Minister Julia Gillard said on Friday, removing an obstacle to talks with independents on forming a new government.

Independent lawmakers had sought a Treasury briefing on the cost of election promises before deciding which side to support following inconclusive Aug. 21 elections. Conservative opposition leader Tony Abbott had earlier declined to submit his policies for costing analysis.
