Earl strengthens to Category 2 hurricane in Caribbean

WASHINGTON Aug 29 (Reuters) - Hurricane Earl strengthened to a Category 2 storm on Sunday night with top winds near 100 mph (160 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Earl, which is threatening islands in the eastern Caribbean, is expected to become a major hurricane by late Monday, the Miami-based hurricane center said.
