COPENHAGEN, Aug 31 (Reuters) - The world's fourth biggest brewer Carlsberg (CARLb.CO) said on Tuesday its Swiss unit Feldschlosschen would close one brewery and concentrate production at another as it seeks to shed excess capacity.
The Fribourg brewery will be closed down by June 2011 and production for Feldschlosschen's Swiss market will be concentrated at its main brewery in Rheinfelden, Carlsberg A/S said in a statement.
A Carlsberg spokesman declined to give any estimate of the financial impact of the closure, which will affect 75 Fribourg employees who will either retire or be offered alternative jobs within Feldschlosschen.
Carlsberg said the planned closure is part of efforts to streamline its production network.
"Volume is being transferred from Switzerland to the brewery in Obernai in France, which became part of the Carlsberg Group following the acquisition of Brasseries Kronenbourg in 2008," the company said.
"During the last years, Feldschlosschen in Switzerland has been producing below its capacity," it said. "With volume moving to France, overcapacity will become even more significant."
The Fribourg brewery has annual capacity of 1 million hectolitres and the Rheinfelden brewery 2 million hectolitres, Carlsberg spokesman Jens Bekke said.
"Capacity use has been 40 percent at Fribourg for the past year," Bekke said.
The Carlsberg Group sold more than 135 million hectolitres of beer in 2009.
Feldschlosschen also has a microbrewery in Sion, with capacity of 50,000 hectolitres, which will be retained, Carlsberg said. (Editing by Mike Nesbit)
